What does root barrier cost per foot?
Bamboo Shield and Sidewalk Shield root barrier cost $2.77 to $6.49 per foot, set by depth. Price per foot doesn't change with length, and shipping is free to the lower 48 states.

At 30 in and 36 in, both brands are the same roll at the same price.
For bamboo, the depth goes by your USDA zone, then the size of your bamboo. Zones 4–7: 24 in for bamboo up to about 25 ft, 30 in for anything larger, timber bamboo included. Zone 8: 30 in. Zones 9–11: 36 in.
Can't name your bamboo or its mature height? Use the larger-bamboo depth for your zone: 30 in in zones 4–8, 36 in in 9–11. In loose or sandy soil, go one depth deeper, up to 36 in. Do Grass Barrier and Pier Protector cost less in bulk?
Yes. Both drop in price at 50 ft, and Grass Barrier drops again at 100 ft. The lower price shows in the cart.
The breaks count every foot of that product in the order, across cuts. Two 30 ft cuts of Grass Barrier make 60 ft, so both get the 50 ft price.

How does cut-to-length ordering work?
Pick a depth and a length, and we cut one continuous piece. You pay by the foot, so the cart quantity is the number of feet.
- 5 ft steps. Pick a length, or type one. A typed length rounds up, so 47 ft becomes 50 ft.
- Minimum 20 ft per cut, for every product.
- A longest piece for each depth, in the table above. Type more and the page sets the length to it. Add another cut for the rest.
- Two or more cuts. Add the first cut to the cart, then pick the next length and add it again. Each add is its own cart line and its own piece.
- Buying through an AI assistant? The same 5 ft steps, 20 ft minimum and longest pieces apply.
Why is there a longest piece?
Each cut ships as one box, and boxes stay under 110 lb. Deeper, thicker barrier weighs more per foot, so its longest piece is shorter.
A full-length root barrier piece weighs about 100 to 105 lb, so plan on two people to carry it. Grass Barrier and Pier Protector pieces are lighter: about 45 lb at full length.
How do I order a run longer than one piece?
Order more than one cut and join them. On Bamboo Shield and Sidewalk Shield, each joint is an overlap of at least 12 in, clamped with one connecting kit. Grass Barrier ends overlap a little inside the connecting-kit clamps, with no extra length to order.
First check whether one piece is enough. A closed loop in one piece still has one joint, where its ends meet, so it fits 1 ft less:

If not, work it out:
- Pieces: divide the line by the longest piece and round up, to at least two.
- Joints: a straight line has one fewer than its pieces. A closed loop has one per piece.
- Feet: add 12 in per joint, then round up to the next 5 ft.
- Cuts: split the feet into cuts of 20 ft or more, none over the longest piece. If they won't fit, add a piece.
- Kits: one per joint, matched to the depth.
Example: 200 ft of 18 in Sidewalk Shield
200 ft is over the 175 ft longest piece: two pieces, one joint, 200 + 1 = 201 ft. Order 105 ft + 100 ft = 205 ft. At October 2026 prices, 205 × $2.77 = $567.85, plus one $18.00 kit: $585.85.

A 20 × 30 ft bamboo planting
The loop is 20 + 30 + 20 + 30 = 100 ft, plus 12 in for each joint.

At 30 in, a 20 × 29.5 ft bed is 99 ft around, so it fits one 100 ft piece. That is 100 × $4.88 + $34.99 = $522.99, or $59.39 less than two cuts. It leaves no spare, so measure carefully.

A 90 ft Grass Barrier edge along a Bermuda lawn
90 ft × $1.63 = $146.70, but 100 ft × $1.44 = $144.00. Order one 100 ft piece: $2.70 less, with 10 ft spare.
A straight edge in one piece has no joint, so it needs no kit. The Grass Barrier install manual shows how deep to set it.
Ten 12 in dock pilings
- Each piling takes π × 12 + 6 = about 43.7 in.
- 10 × 43.7 = 437 in, and 437 ÷ 12 = 36.4 ft. 40 ft would cover it.
- But 40 × $4.00 = $160.00, and 50 × $3.00 = $150.00.
- Order 50 ft and one install kit: $150.00 + $39.99 = $189.99. The 163 in left over makes three spares.

Is shipping free, and can I return a cut piece?
Yes to both. Shipping is free at any length, to the lower 48 states only. Orders placed before 2 pm Central on a business day usually ship that day. Otherwise they ship the next business day, by FedEx Home Delivery or FedEx Ground.
You can return a piece within 30 days of delivery, cut rolls included, if it is unused and uninstalled. You pay the return shipping on a coil of up to 105 lb, so measure the line twice before you order. We refund the original payment within 5 business days of receiving the return.
If a box arrives damaged, email photos to hello@protechplastic.com within 7 days of delivery, and we'll send a replacement.
Common mistakes when ordering
- Leaving out the overlap. A 100 ft loop needs at least 101 ft, and at 30 in that means two pieces.
- Forgetting a kit. It's one per joint, even on a one-piece loop.
- Stopping just short of a volume break. 45 ft of Grass Barrier costs more than 50 ft.
FAQ
Can I order 32 ft?
No, a typed 32 ft rounds up to 35 ft, the next 5 ft step. At 24 in, 35 ft of Bamboo Shield is 35 × $2.93 = $102.55 (October 2026 prices). For a closed loop, add the 12 in joint before you round.
What if I type more than the longest piece?
The page sets it to the longest piece for that depth and shows a note. Type 200 ft of 24 in Bamboo Shield, and it becomes 175 ft. A straight 200 ft line needs 201 ft, so add a second cut of 30 ft and one 24 in connecting kit.
Is there a bulk price on Bamboo Shield or Sidewalk Shield?
No, root barrier costs the same per foot at any length. At 30 in, 20 ft is $97.60 and 100 ft is $488.00, both $4.88 a foot (October 2026 prices). Only Grass Barrier and Pier Protector have volume prices, from 50 ft.
