How to install Grass Barrier

Call 811 before you dig. Grass Barrier is a 10 in tall strip. Dig a narrow trench and stand it in at the height you want: 4 in above grade, 2 in, or flush. Join the ends with the Grass Barrier connecting kit, overlapping them a little inside the clamps, then firm the soil on both sides. Let the coil relax in the sun before you start.

Work out your length

  1. Measure every bed edge you want to protect, in feet.
  2. Round up to the next 5 ft.
  3. Count one connecting kit for each joint, including where the ends of a closed bed meet. Joints need no extra length.

Example: a 12 ft by 8 ft bed is 40 ft around. Order 40 ft and one connecting kit for the joint where the ends meet.

The “How much do I need?” calculator on the Grass Barrier page does this math for you.

One per joint: two pre-drilled 200 mil HDPE clamps with 316 stainless hardware.

Steps

Drawing of Grass Barrier edging between a lawn and a planted bed, with the grass roots on the lawn side
The barrier sits between the lawn and the bed, below the soil.
  1. Lay out the edge

Shape the bed line with a garden hose or rope, then measure it.

  2. Relax the coil

Unroll the barrier and let it sit in the sun before you set it. It is easier to set once it lies flat.

  3. Dig a narrow trench

Dig 6 in deep for the standard edge with 4 in above grade, 8 in for a 2 in low profile, or 10 in to set it flush.

  4. Set and join

Stand the barrier in the trench. Where two ends meet, overlap them a little inside the clamps of the Grass Barrier connecting kit and fasten the clamps, one kit per joint. The overlap makes the joint easier to line up.

  5. Backfill

Firm the soil on both sides so the edge stays at the height you chose, then top off the bed.

Check your work

  • The edge shows the same height all along: 4 in, 2 in, or none if flush.
  • Every joint overlaps a little inside the clamps and is fastened with a Grass Barrier connecting kit.
  • The soil is firm on both sides, and the curves hold their shape.

Maintain

  • Trim grass that grows over the top edge when you edge the bed. The barrier works below the soil, so top growth still needs trimming.
  • Keep mulch from building up over the top edge.

Questions

Is Grass Barrier 10 in deep or 10 in tall?

10 in tall, from top to bottom. You choose how much goes below the soil: 6 in for the standard edge, 8 in for a low profile, or all 10 in to set it flush.

How much should show above the soil?

4 in for the standard edge, set 6 in below grade. 2 in for a low profile, set 8 in below. None if you set it flush, with all 10 in below grade.

The coil will not lie straight. What do I do?

Let it relax in the sun before you set it. It is easier to set once it lies flat.

How do I join two ends?

With the Grass Barrier connecting kit: two pre-drilled 200 mil HDPE clamps with 316 stainless hardware. Overlap the ends a little inside the clamps; it makes the joint easier to line up. You don't need to order extra length for it. Use one kit per joint.

What does the Edge Guard do?

The Grass Barrier Edge Guard is a cap that fits over the top edge. It smooths out waves, makes the top edge look thicker and more finished, and makes the edge a little safer to brush against. It comes in a 22 ft length.

Can grass still get over the top?

Yes. Grass Barrier works below the soil, so trim any grass that grows over the top edge when you edge the bed.
