How to Protect Dock Pilings: Start With the Problem
Surface wrap, bumpers and fenders, and structural repair address different parts of a piling-protection plan. Start with the condition or contact you need to address, then inspect, measure, and choose the right next step.
Wrap sound wood only. Pier Protector is a cover, not a repair for a damaged piling.
Inspect questionable pilings before covering the surface.
Plan access, tides, fastening, and local requirements before cutting.
Three different jobs: surface wrap, contact protection, and structural work
The word “protection” can describe very different goals around a dock. Define the job before comparing products.
| Approach | The job it addresses | What it does not replace |
|---|---|---|
| Surface wrap | Creates a fitted exterior layer around a planned zone of a timber piling. Protech’s Pier Protector application uses a 48-inch-wide, nominal 30-mil HDPE profile. | It is not structural repair, a diagnosis of pile condition, or a substitute for a bumper or fender selected for vessel contact. |
| Bumpers and fenders | Provide a separate system for expected vessel or dock contact. Exact placement, dimensions, and hardware belong to the selected system and site plan. | They do not determine whether a piling is structurally sound, and they should not be assumed to provide the same surface coverage as a fitted wrap. |
| Inspection and repair | Determine the piling’s condition and address damage, deterioration, or other structural concerns through an appropriate professional plan. | Repair or replacement cannot be supplied by adding an exterior wrap or contact accessory over an unresolved condition. |
A project may use more than one approach. For example, a dock can have a surface-wrap plan for a selected pile zone and a separate bumper or fender system where vessel contact is expected. One should not be treated as proof that the other is unnecessary.
Inspect the piling before covering it
Do not use new material to hide a condition that has not been evaluated. Inspect the intended installation zone and resolve any damage or uncertainty that needs professional attention before wrapping begins. HDPE wrap is not a structural repair.
Surface preparation also has to fit the site. The current Pier Protector field method calls for attached material to be removed using methods allowed for the location, followed by an inspection of the exposed piling. Confirm applicable local and environmental requirements before preparation or installation.
Choose the approach by the problem you can actually identify
-
Define the installation zone
Record where protection is being considered and the tallest planned protected height. Note tides, current, waves, weather, vessel traffic, and the work position needed to reach that area safely.
-
Separate surface coverage from vessel contact
If the goal is a fitted exterior layer around the piling, evaluate a wrap system. If the goal is to manage contact from a vessel or dock edge, evaluate a bumper or fender system intended for that contact. If both conditions are present, plan them as separate systems.
-
Resolve structural questions
Damaged, deteriorated, or otherwise questionable pilings need assessment before a surface wrap, bumper, or fender is used. Do not rely on an accessory to establish structural suitability.
-
Check the limits of the selected material
The Protech piling-wrap profile is 48 inches wide. A protected zone up to 48 inches uses one stock-width section. A taller zone requires a confirmed plan for additional sections, vertical seams, and fastening; the current online calculator intentionally pauses ordering for that review.
How to measure an HDPE piling-wrap project
Measure every piling at the exact zone where the wrap will sit. Similar-looking pilings can have different dimensions.
Round pilings
Measure the diameter straight across the pile. The documented cut calculation is:
Diameter × π + 6 inches of seam overlap = cut length for one pile
Square or irregular pilings
Use a flexible tape to measure the complete perimeter once around the pile at the planned installation zone. Then add six inches for the seam:
Measured perimeter + 6 inches of seam overlap = cut length for one pile
Combine the project
Repeat the calculation for every pile or every confirmed group of identical piles. Add all cut lengths together, convert the total to feet, and round the combined project up once to the next whole linear foot. The product is ordered in one-foot increments and is intended as one continuous cut when stock and shipping limits allow.
Confirm the field plan before cutting or fastening
Read the complete dock-piling wrap installation field guide before work begins. The Pier Protector installation method uses black stretch wrap beneath the HDPE, anchors the first edge, closes a six-inch overlap, and fastens the final seam from top to bottom. The current field guide records at least three under-wrap layers, three to four compatible nails at the first edge, and approximately three- to six-inch fastener spacing along the final seam.
Those measurements do not override the instructions supplied with current installation hardware or any site-specific fastening requirements. Confirm:
- stable access for the expected tide, current, waves, and weather;
- marine-appropriate personal protective equipment;
- the condition and permitted preparation of every piling;
- the exact installation elevation and protected height;
- the compatible fastener and seam plan;
- applicable local and environmental requirements; and
- any separate bumper, fender, or dock-hardware plan for the same area.
After installation, check that the wrap is secure, the seam is closed, and no sharp fastener condition creates a contact or work hazard. Reinspect after the installation has experienced normal site conditions, and include the wrap and fasteners in routine dock inspections.
What this guide does not promise
This guide does not assign a service life or claim universal suitability for every exposure. It also does not claim that surface wrap treats an existing organism condition, reverses decay, prevents every type of deterioration, eliminates maintenance, or guarantees structural performance. Site conditions and pile condition still need to be evaluated on their own facts.

Questions before ordering
The practical details.
Use the application and installation pages for the complete material and field sequence.
What is the best way to protect dock pilings?+
The right approach depends on the job. Surface wrap creates an exterior layer around a planned pile zone. Bumpers and fenders manage vessel or dock contact. Inspection, repair, or replacement addresses pile condition and structural concerns. A project may need more than one of these approaches.
Does piling wrap replace a dock bumper or fender?+
No. A fitted surface wrap and a contact-management system have different jobs. Select bumpers or fenders for the expected contact and use a separate wrap plan when an exterior piling layer is also required.
Can I wrap a damaged dock piling?+
Do not treat HDPE wrap as structural repair or use it to cover an unresolved condition. Damaged, deteriorated, or questionable pilings need appropriate professional assessment before wrapping.
How much HDPE wrap do I need for each piling?+
For a round pile, multiply the measured diameter by pi and add six inches for the seam. For a square or irregular pile, measure the complete perimeter and add six inches. Combine all cuts and round the project total up once to the next whole foot.
What if I need to cover more than 48 inches of pile height?+
The Protech roll is 48 inches wide. A taller zone requires additional sections plus a confirmed plan for vertical seams, joint placement, and fastening. The current guidance does not define that multi-section detail, so contact project support before ordering.
Does HDPE piling wrap eliminate inspection and maintenance?+
No. Check the completed seam and fasteners, reinspect after the installation has experienced normal site conditions, and include the wrap in routine dock inspections. No surface-wrap product should be treated as a substitute for ongoing condition review.
