Pier Protector Piling Wrap
A 48 in wide, UV-stabilized HDPE wrap for dock and pier pilings. Cut to the length you order, in 5 ft steps.
Width
Project pricing is calculated for the full continuous cut.
Volume pricing, taken off in the cart: $3.00/ft at 50 ft or more. Every foot of Pier Protector in your order counts, across cuts.
One continuous piece up to 75 ft. For a longer run, add another cut.
How much do I need?
Each pile takes π × its diameter plus 6 in of overlap. One piece covers up to 48 in of height.
Over 48 in, stack bands: each overlaps the one below by 6 in, upper band over the lower one.

How it works
Pier Protector is a 48 in wide sheet of UV-stabilized 30 mil HDPE, a cover for sound wood. Each piece wraps one pile over stretch wrap and is nailed along the seam.
One piece per pile
Cut each piece to π × pile diameter + 6 in of overlap. A 12 in pile takes about 43.7 in.
Stretch wrap underneath
Wrap at least 3 layers of stretch wrap around the pile before the HDPE goes on.
Tacked, then nailed
Tack one edge with 3 to 4 nails, pull the sheet tight around the pile, overlap the ends 6 in, then nail the seam every 3 to 6 in.
Stacked for taller zones
Each piece covers up to 48 in of height. For a taller zone, stack bands with a 6 in overlap, upper band over the lower one so water runs off.
How much do I cut for each piling?
Cut π × diameter + 6 in for each piling: the distance around the pile plus a 6 in overlap. Measure each pile where the wrap goes, because pilings vary.
| Piling diameter | Distance around (π × D) | Cut per piling (+ 6 in) | Ten pilings: order |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 in | 25.1 in | 31.1 in | 30 ft |
| 10 in | 31.4 in | 37.4 in | 35 ft |
| 12 in | 37.7 in | 43.7 in | 40 ft |
| 14 in | 44.0 in | 50.0 in | 45 ft |
| 16 in | 50.3 in | 56.3 in | 50 ft |
Worked example: ten 12 in pilings take 10 × 43.7 in = 437 in. 437 ÷ 12 = 36.4 ft, so order 40 ft and one install kit.
Order by the total length of your cuts, not by square feet. The 48 in width runs up the pile, so one piece covers a band up to 48 in tall.
For a zone taller than 48 in, stack bands with a 6 in overlap, upper band over the lower one, and cut one piece per band.
How to install it
The short version of the install manual.
-
Measure each pile
Cut length per pile = π × pile diameter + 6 in of overlap. Pilings vary, so measure each one.
-
Stretch wrap first
Wrap at least 3 layers of stretch wrap around the pile where the HDPE will go.
-
Tack and wrap
Tack one edge of the HDPE with 3 to 4 nails, pull the sheet tight around the pile and overlap the ends 6 in.
-
Nail the seam
Nail the seam every 3 to 6 in. Each piece covers up to 48 in of height.
-
Stack bands for a taller zone
Overlap each band 6 in, upper band over the lower one so water runs off.

Questions
How much Pier Protector do I need for my dock?
For each piling, cut π × diameter + 6 in. A 12 in pile takes about 43.7 in. Add up every pile, divide by 12 and round up to the next 5 ft. Ten 12 in pilings need about 36.4 ft, so order 40 ft and one install kit. Order by the length of your cuts, not by square feet.
How tall a band does one piece cover?
Up to 48 in, the width of the sheet. For a taller zone, stack bands with a 6 in overlap, the upper band over the lower one so water runs off, and cut one piece per band.
How is it installed?
Wrap at least 3 layers of stretch wrap around the pile. Tack one edge of the HDPE with 3 to 4 nails, pull the sheet tight around the pile, overlap the ends 6 in, then nail the seam every 3 to 6 in. The install manual has every step.
What is the stretch wrap for?
At least 3 tight layers of stretch wrap go on first, under the HDPE. They seal the wood surface in the wrapped band as a layer against marine borers such as shipworms and gribbles. The HDPE on top takes the rubbing, sun and debris.
What is in the install kit?
A 3 in × 1,000 ft roll of stretch wrap and about 160 stainless ring-shank nails, enough for about 10 pilings.
How is it sold?
By the foot in 5 ft steps, 48 in wide, with a 20 ft minimum. Each cut ships as one continuous piece up to 75 ft. For more, order more than one cut.
Do longer orders cost less?
Yes. Pier Protector is $4.00 per foot, and $3.00 from 50 ft, applied automatically in the cart. Every foot of Pier Protector in your order counts, across cuts. There is no further break.
What is it made of?
30 mil UV-stabilized HDPE, made in the USA.
Will it repair a damaged piling?
No. Pier Protector is a cover for sound wood. It is not a repair for a damaged piling.
Does Pier Protector stop marine borers?
We don't promise that. The stretch wrap under each piece is there as a layer against marine borers in the wrapped band, and the HDPE on top takes the wear. For the best result, wrap sound wood and cover the band where your pilings show wear.
What do shipping and returns cost?
